How to make fabric rope baskets step by step

To learn how to make a rope basket you don’t need to have a sewing machine or craft experience.

Follow this step by step and you will have your rope basket ready in just 4 steps.

  • Step 1

Cut the rope to the amount you need for the size of your basket.

    As a reference, we use 21 yards (19 meters) to make a 6” (15cm) deep, 6” (15cm) diameter basket.
  • Step 2

This step is optional. You can use fabric scraps to decorate your rope or even dye it colors with fabric dye.

If you use scraps of fabric, you should cut the fabric into strips (2cm wide). Then, with force, begin to wrap the rope as far as you want and with the glue, gradually stick the fabric to the cord so that it is firm.

On the other hand, if you prefer to dye the cord, you must dilute the dye in water and follow the instructions on the package. Generally, you should boil a pot of water, add the dye, and mix, but be sure to follow the manufacturer’s correct steps.

  • Step 3

Put hot glue on one end of the rope to prevent fraying.

Begin to tightly wrap the rope around itself, applying glue as you go so that the next turn of rope sticks.

Continue rolling the rope, flat and to the size you want, to form the bottom of the basket.

  • Step 4

Once the bottom of the basket has reached the size you want, put glue on the last round of string and start wrapping the next round on top of the last round that was flat.

Continue gluing the rope over the top of the last round that made up the bottom instead of the side, this serves to grow the sidewalls of your rope basket.

To help with the shape, you can place a bowl or bucket in the center to serve as a support as the basket grows in height.

When it reaches the depth you want, cut off the excess rope, and put a little glue on the end to prevent the rope from fraying.
