DIY cake topper tutorial
Follow these steps to learn how to make cake toppers with Cricut. In this tutorial we will make a “Happy Birthday” Cricut cake topper, then you can customize it however you like.
Step 1
Open a new project in the Cricut Design Space app and click the “text” button to write the phrase you want, in this case, I’ll write HAPPY BIRTHDAY.
The text will be written in a default font, but we can change it and choose a more fun font according to the occasion that will be celebrated with the cake.
Click the “Ungroup Letters” button to edit each letter separately. You can modify the size of each one, rotate them or move the letters of place.
For cake toppers, I recommend using a thick font to give your project stability.
Step 2
Arrange the letters so all the letters stay together after your Cricut cuts out the cake topper.
Start by overlapping all the letters, so that there is a join point between each letter. To do this, it can be useful to rotate the letters or change their size.
When all your letters are overlapping, select them and click “Weld” to create a single layer.
Step 3
So that the cake topper has a nice paper on both sides, what we will do is copy and then invert the entire text.
To do this you need to duplicate the layer, select one of the copies, click “Flip” and select the “Flip Horizontal” option.
Step 4
If you need to increase or decrease the size of the project, make sure the front and back of the topper are the same sizes.
Once your design is ready, click the green “Make It” button.
Step 5
When you submit your project, you will see that there are two mats, one with the front cake topper and one with the backside. First, choose one and then repeat the process with the other.
Place the cardstock on the mat and secure it with your hands. Load it into your Cricut and press the “Flashing Go” button to start the cut.
When your Cricut is done cutting, remove the mat by bending it a little and remove the material.
Repeat the process with the other mat to make the back of the cake topper.
Step 6
Once you have both cuts, assemble your cake topper. Use little glue but make sure everything is glued and aligned.
Let the decoration dry a bit and turn it over to stick the cake decoration stick. You can choose to place a single stick in the center of the topper or one at each end if it is a large topper.
Finally, you know how to make cake topper with Cricut to customize and decorate your family and friends’ cakes.
Enjoy every celebration! 🙂
