How to Make Any Cricut Project Dishwasher Safe

In today’s blog post we are going to be going over how to make any Cricut project dishwasher safe. Before we jump in to today’s post, if you haven’t already read our blog post on Cricut Beginner Hacks, I would start there. You can also read all about the Cricut Mug Press here, in which case your mug projects will automatically be dishwasher safe.

This blog post is specifically geared towards the crafters who like to make mugs, tumblers, and anything else that would go in the dishwasher. This post is not for projects that use paper, shirts, fabric, etc. But you can also use some of these hacks on things like home décor. Sealing these types of projects so that they are dish washer safe is going to make your projects last for a lifetime.

First, I will reveal the BIG secret hack. Dish washer safe Mod Podge. You must make sure you get the dishwasher safe kind. Regular Mod Podge does not hold up on anything that gets wet.

For instance, you may have made a drink coaster with normal Mod Podge, and once the drink starts to sweat with condensation, you will notice that the coaster becomes wrinkled and sticky. The dishwasher safe Mod Podge is designed to not do that – it is totally dish washer safe!!

How to apply dish washer safe mod podge:

  1. First, apply your vinyl to whatever project you are making like you normally would.
  2. Dip a craft foam brush in the dishwasher safe Mod Podge.
  3. Brush the mod podge lightly over the area of the vinyl, just to give it a light coat.
  4. Let the coating dry completely for about 30 minutes
  5. Then add two more coats, letting each dry for 30 minutes.

You can choose to only mod podge the area with the vinyl decal, or you can choose to Mod Podge the entire surface of the project. Mod Podge is not technically safe to ingest, so if you are doing a project such as a mug or tumbler, only coat the parts of the mug that you do not use to sip.

This next part is very important. You do have to let the project sit for a total of 28 days before putting it in the dishwasher to let it cure. So for instance, if you are planning on giving something as a gift, you need to give yourself plenty of time to do these projects. Or let the recipient know that they cannot wash the item for 28 days. But after those 28 days, the curing has happened, and the vinyl will never go anywhere!

This is a great hack to use if you are looking for a true professional look. It will elevate your projects, make them sellable, and look like you bought them right out of a store! This is a must for taking these projects from a beginner to a professional.

I hope you enjoyed this blog post on how to make any Cricut project dishwasher safe. Happy crafting!
