Etching on glass is a technique that has been around for centuries. The Cricut cutting machine makes the process easier than ever before, but it still takes patience and skill to get perfect results. In this blog post, we will give you some tips on how to get perfect results and 3 Cricut etching ideas that are elegant in their simplicity. These Cricut etching ideas are perfect for crafters who want something different from the traditional Cricut etched designs.

How to Etch Glass on Your Cricut

Are you ready to branch out and try something new? Etching on glass is a technique most Cricut owners are hesitant to try. But, it’s fun. It’s easy. And it’s a new technique to add to your skills.

It is very simple to etch on glass using a Cricut. With the exception of some Pyrex and colored glass, it works on just about any glass. The glass etching method can be used to create personalized drinking glasses, etched wine glasses, etched baking dishes, etc. You can give it as a gift and the results are permanent and never fade.

An easy first project to try is making a set of drinking glasses.

Cricut Etching on Glass

To make etched drinking glasses you’ll need the following supplies.

Step 1 – Using Cricut Design Space, design the logo, name, or saying you want to etch onto your glass. For this first project, choose your initials or a simple design.

Step 2 – Cut the design using your Cricut machine.

Step 3 – Reverse Weed your vinyl. Weed the opposite way, removing the letters and leaving the negative spaces. Then, using transfer tape, apply your stencil to the glass to prepare it for etching. After smoothing it down, peel away the transfer tape, leaving the vinyl behind. Cover the rest of the glass in painter’s tape. This prevents the etching cream from damaging any other part of the project.

Step 4 – Clean the surface to remove any dust, grease, or fingerprints. To do this, use rubbing alcohol and a lint-free cloth.

Step 5 – Apply the glass etching cream. It’s best to do this over a sink and in an area that is well ventilated. Using the small paintbrush, generously apply the Armour Etching Cream and set a timer for three minutes.

Step 6 – When the timer goes off, remove the glass etching cream with water by holding the glass under running water. Rinse until all the etching cream is removed and the glass is clean.

Step 7 – Repeat Steps 1 – 6 on all your glasses. To reveal the etching, remove the vinyl stencil from the glass.

What Vinyl Should I use for Glass Etching?

Vinyl

I have learned from experience that Cricut permanent vinyl is best. This vinyl takes 72 hours to cure, so you will not have a problem removing it from the glass when you’re finished etching. When using lower-quality vinyl, I sometimes had a hard time removing all the vinyl.

What Can I Etch with Cricut Maker?

The Cricut Maker 3 comes with an Engraving Tip that can engrave soft metals, acrylic, leather, paper, and plastic. This adds a lot of variety to the type of projects you can create. But, for etching on glass, you won’t need to use the Cricut Engraving Tip. You can use any Cricut cutting machine to design and cut your stencil to use for etching on glass. The actual glass etching is done with Armour Etch.
